A Manual de Higiene oral para personas con discapacidad

Este Manual ha sido elaborado en la Unidad de Pacientes Especiales que dirige el profesor Pedro Diz en la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela (España). No es un libro de carácter técnico, se trata de una obra orientada hacia los pacientes, sus familias y cuidadores. El manual se compone de cuatro grandes secciones. En la primera se incluyen una serie de definiciones y datos epidemiológicos sobre la discapacidad en España. La segunda parte muestra los principales problemas odontológicos que afectan a la población discapacitada y los elementos para diseñar un programa de higiene oral. En el tercer bloque se presentan de forma esquemática las discapacidades más frecuentes en el gabinete odontológico, sus hallazgos orales más frecuentes y las medidas de higiene oral que suelen ser más recomendables. El capítulo final del libro aporta información práctica para diseñar un plan de higiene oral. Esperamos que este manual os resulte de utilidad.

Access to dental care for a population of homeless people in Dublin

This presentation was given at iADH2014 Berlin and won one of four clinical prizes. It is written by Dr Emma Corrigan who undertook the service delivery project to develop oral health services for a population of homeless individuals as part of her assessment for a diploma in Special Care Dentistry in Dublin, Ireland which she gained in 2013.

Elinor Bouvy-Berends ( 1945) received her dental degree in 1968 (Utrecht) and she is Past-president and Honorary Life Member of the Dutch Society for Disability and Oral Health, VBTGG. In 2010 the International Association of Disability and Oral Health, iADH, awarded her with an Honorary Life Membership. She is Past-president of the European Federation for the Advancement of
Analgesia, Sedation and Anesthesia in Dentistry, EFAAD and at present she is a member of the Working Group of the Dutch Dental Association (NMT Nederlandse Maatschappij Tandheelkunde) for the Development of a National Institute for Guidelines in Dentistry. Her special interest is in the field of pain, pain management, sedation and anaesthesia for Special Needs Patients and this presentation was given as a keynote lecture in Berlin 2014 and details pain expression and pain communication in people with intellectual disability and dementia.

Autism Spectrum Disorders

This presentation was given at the iADH Berlin Congress 2014 by Professor Doctor Inge Kamp-Becker who is Professor of Autism Spectrum Disorders and lead psychiatrist in the department of child and adult psychiatry, University of Marburg, Germany. She was part of the german Guidelines Group for ASD and is on the scientific board of the self-help group Autismus and she has numerous grants and publications related to ASD and the neuro-biological basis of empathy and emotion .

The presentation describes and details ASD and dispels the common myths surrounding ASD suggests strategies for provision of dental care accounting for the characteristic impairments associated with individuals who have ASD.

This interesting presentation was given in Berlin at the 2014 Congress and details the organisational and legal aspects of GA and sedation for patients requiring special care dentistry in Asia including Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and South Korea.

Professor Shun-Te Huang is a professor of Special Care Dentistry and faculty of Oral
Hygiene at the College of Dental Medicine, Kaohsiung Medical University,
Taiwan, and president of the Taiwan Association for Disabilities and Oral Health and
a former board member of the International Association for Disability and Oral Health
(IADH). Dr. Huang is trained and  certified as a specialist in anesthesiology, pediatric dentistry and special care
dentistry and is a distinguished academic and has focused his research in the field of epidemiology of oral health and risk
factors of normal and developmentally delayed children, health and long-term care
needs for the elderly. Oral health and general health, impact of SECC to the general
health of children, dental fear and anesthesiology issues.

General Anaesthetic for patients requiring SCD in North America

Dr. Caputo is a Diplomat of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. Dr. Caputo is Past President of the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists and he serves as an Assistant Program Director in Arizona for Lutheran Medical Center’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency and is Faculty with the Dental Anesthesia and Pediatric Dentistry Residency programs. Dr. Caputo is
a journal reviewer for Special Care in Dentistry and teaches at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health. He is a sedation and anesthesia evaluator for the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners and serves on the Anesthesia Committee for the
Board as well as being an Anesthesia expert for the Board.

In this presentation which was given as a keynote at the IADH 2014 Congress in Berlin he outlines the principles of  GA for patients requiring special care dentistry including airway assessment and patient selection.

This thought provoking talk from Joachim Jardenberg was presented at iADH 2014 was sponsored by the Hellenic Society for Disability and Oral Health. Jocke is CEO of Mindpark, tech advisor to the Swedish Prime Minister and in addition to being a Senior Advisor in all things Internet he is a social media therapist and  entrepreneur. He tells us that due to latest advances in technology life has never been more confusing or control been this distributed, that change will never again be this slow and the possibilities never greater for how we network, operate across the continents, share our work and collaborate.

iADH can achieve limitless progress if we embrace this new technological world in which we are immersed.

Prevention and SCD – Belgian Perspective

This keynote presentation was given by Prof Dominque Declerk at iADH2014 Berlin.

Prof Declerck graduated as a dentist at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) in 1984 and obtained her doctoral degree in 1989, and she is currently appointed as full professor where she is responsible for the undergraduate teaching in preventive dentistry and community dental health and parts of the clinical training
program. She participates in the postgraduate training in Pediatric dentistry and Special dental care.
Currently she is the head of the Department of Oral Health Sciences. Her clinical work covers the
dental follow-up of children with extensive treatment needs and the dental care for persons with
special needs (handicapped persons, medically compromised patients). Research work is situated within the field of oral health epidemiology. She was the initiator and scientific coordinator of the Signal Tandmobiel®project, a longitudinal oral health promotion project in Flemish schoolchildren (1996-2002) and launched an oral health promotion intervention study, the Smile for Life project, in young children (2003-2011). In both studies the methodological component was an area of specific interest. She is founding member of the Belgian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and council member for Belgium in the European Academy for Pediatric Dentistry. She was president of the European Association of Dental Public health between 2005 and 2007.
